| Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime |
|
The Dreamtime is the magical spirit world as perceived by the native tribal peoples of Australia which is accessible to us through dreams and visions. Rituals and rites incorporate the symbolic language, body painting, song, dance and music which connect the people to the Dreamtime. Many of the symbols appearing in the Dreamtime story paintings are also used in ritual body painting. Beliefs and myths of Creation and nature (including topographical geography, plants, animals, seasons and weather) are often the topics of Dreamtime stories which are related through oral traditions and Dreamtime story paintings. The deities of the Aboriginals have distinct personalities and duties, but, notably, there is not the clear sense of good and evil as appears in most Western mythologies. Many Dreamtime paintings are symbolic maps and mythological stories of creation used to memorize the locations of rock holes and significant sites.

Kudjewk
The Monsoon season, January through March, is the time of rejuvenation in the Cape York area when the estuaries are full of fish and nesting birds. This painting depicts two of the area's Black Reef Herons known as Kunai and three of the Gaigai or Trevally fish. Kudjewk brings forth a plethora of plant and animal life making this time prime for raising hatchlings. The bars connecting the Kunai represent the mating of the two. The dynamics of the black birds against the complex cross-hatching create an intense energy. An amazing work! |

Ngundaman
Ngundaman is shown at the sacred site where she now dwells symbolized by the object on which she sits. She is the mystical Dreaming Spirit responsible for spiritual guidance and Dreamtime, equal in power to her sister, Ngalyol, the Great Rainbow Spirit. Ngundaman and Ngalyol are daughters of Nglakunburriyaymi. Ngundaman is one of the Aboriginal totemic connections which are vital in sustaining the Aborignals' spiritual tie to the land. The skeletons of fish and echidna, common foods, symbolize the sustaining nourishment of the Earth for which she is responsible. |

Pupiya Circles represent campfires with the black crescent shapes being men around the camps. The yellow orche half arrows are Mala (Hare Wallaby) "Dreaming Tracks" with the middle mark being that of his tail when he stops to rest. "Dreaming Tracks" are generated by song-cycles to help memorize rock hole locations. Smaller red circles with white dots show the rock holes where Mala like to hide, concentric circles usually symbolize rockholes, campsites or waterholes. Mala are just one of the many small wallabies, smaller kangaroo type mammals, found throughout Australia. This type of Dreamtime story is very typical of the interior desert regions. |

Mojqu
Mojqu is a segment of Dreamtime mythology pertaining to the artist's homeland. Part of the story, a hunt symbolized by the shield and spear, is secret and cannot be divulged to the uninitiated or to outsiders, but generally concerns the travels of a magical snake woman from an area west of Cherbourg in Northern Queensland. Narrative sequences in the mythology are related to topographical features along the journey such as the river depicted in bright blue and the desert rising out of the central yellow dots. The central and smaller roundels represent the big hills in an area known as Ngatarrnga. |
